Zen -Shin -Kyudo –Kai

KYUDO is the ancient art of Japanese Archery and is part of the 3 most important martial arts of the Samurai namely Archery, Horsemanship and Swordsmanship.

KYUDO is the most expensive of the martial arts with an average bow price of £400 or more depending on quality and between £35 and £90 for arrows.

Zen-Shin-Kyudo-Kai does not use the traditional KYUDO glove method of release but uses a Western style TABI on the middle 2 fingers.

Zen–Shin-Kyudo-Kai offers an intensive course on Japanese Archery with certification.

European and International film and television star Angela Sandritter was recently taught the unique and ancient art of KYUDO (Japanese archery) by our own Jon Alexander SHIHAN, in preparation for her role as Rebecca, the main character in the film version of Rosamunde Pilcher’s novel “Arrows of Love” The film is being shot mainly in the Devon area and in particular the grounds of Harberton Manor, Nr. Totnes. Angela Sandritter plays Rebecca, the main character who cannot understand her passion for KYUDO and as the plot unfolds Rebecca comes to realise that her past was not as she had thought it was. As a very young child she was adopted and her stepmother eventually reveals the full circumstances of her adoption and the reason for her interest in Japan and the Japanese culture become evident. The KYUDO bow is 7ft 6ins long and the arrows almost 4ft long. Jon says, “Angela was a natural and talented student. After 30 hours of tuition she had mastered the Art so well that I decided to award her a 1st Dan Degree in KYUDO”.

Shihan Alexander presented Angela with her certification and the traditional Good Luck Arrow, as they do in Japan.

Brazilian Style Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit or be knocked out depending on what submission method is used. The art was based on early 20th century Kodokan Judo ,which was itself then a recently-developed system (founded in 1882), based on multiple schools (or Ryu) of Japanese Jujutsu.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant. It primarily uses Judo takedowns to gain the dominant position. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

Our Instructor level Jiu Jitsu is based on a combination of Brazillian Ju Jitsu, Shoot Fighting and other Grappling Arts. ( This course is taught by 7th Dan & MMA specialist Chris Pearson )

  Self Defence

What does Self Defence really mean? What is reasonable Force? How far can you go in the eyes of the Law?

Self-defence — is the act of defending oneself, one's property or the well-being of another from physical harm. While the term may define any form of personal defence, it is strongly associated with civilian hand-to-hand defence techniques. Self-defence defines a civilian activity as opposed to Hand-to-hand combat in a military context.

This Instructor Level Course, (taught by 7th Dan and Confrontation management instructor specialist Chris Pearson) tries to answer these complicated and sometimes confusing questions, whilst giving you the neccessary physical techniques to teach your Students to repel an attacker, from armed or empty hand Strikes!
